The 5 Social Media Metrics That Actually Matter

It is easy to drown in numbers. Every platform throws dozens of charts at you. But most of them do not tell you anything useful. After years of reading this data for clients, I only really watch five things. These are the ones that move the business.

1. Retention in the first 3 seconds

This tells you if your hook worked. If most people drop off in the first few seconds, the problem is the opening, not the topic. Fix the start and everything else improves.

2. Watch time and average view duration

This is the clearest signal of whether your content actually holds attention. Platforms reward content people watch. So do buyers. Long watch time means your story is working.

3. Shares and saves

Likes are easy. Shares and saves are not. When someone shares your post, they are putting their own name behind it. When they save it, they plan to come back. Both are strong signs that your content is genuinely useful.

If you only track one thing, track shares. Shares are how real growth spreads.

4. Profile visits and follows from a post

This shows when a single post turned a stranger into someone who wants more of you. A spike here means your content did its job: it made people curious about who you are.

5. Inquiries and conversations

This is the one that pays the bills. Comments asking how to work with you, DMs, form fills, calls booked. Everything else is a step toward this. If the first four metrics are healthy and this one is empty, your call to action or your offer needs work.

How to read metrics without losing your mind

Numbers are a tool, not a scoreboard for your self worth. Track the five that matter, ignore the rest, and let the data quietly make you better every week.
